Prediction comes true

Daniel 9:25-26a reads as follows: “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself.”

Here is a stupendous prediction. Speaking in 538 BC, Gabriel the angel predicts that there will be a time interval of exactly 69 weeks between two events:

  1. The going forth of the commandment to restore Jerusalem
  2. Messiah the prince.

The first of these events took place on March 14, 445 BC – nearly a century after Gabriel spoke. No book in the world contains such a bold prediction, so we must investigate the details.

Who is this Messiah the prince?
The Lord Jesus Christ.

Which event in the life of the Messiah is referred to as “messiah the prince”?
Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem recorded in Matthew 21.
We come to this conclusion based on the following considerations:

  1. Prior to the triumphal entry, the Lord Jesus shunned publicity as the Messiah but welcomed it at the triumphal entry; this means he intended his triumphal entry (which took place shortly before passover, when all the Jews would go to Jerusalem) to be his presentation to the nation of Israel as their Messiah.
  2. Addressing Israel, the Lord Jesus referred to the day of his triumphal entry as “this thy day” and “the time of your visitation” that Israel should have known.
  3. The gospel writers testify that the triumphal entry fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 – the very passage which speaks of Israel’s messiah coming to her.

What was the date on which Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphantly?
During his ministry, Jesus went to Jerusalem for the passover 29 AD, 30 AD, 31 AD. Hence his last visit to Jerusalem would have been March-April 32 AD. Jesus died on the passover which was the 14th of Nisan. Counting backwards from the passover, we find that Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem was on the 10th of Nisan 32 AD. This date was 6th April 32 AD.

What is the time interval between the two events?
There was an interval of 173880 days between the two events. Now we have 173880 days which is exactly 69 weeks, each week consisting of 7 years of 360 days each. Thus the angel Gabriel predicted the time interval between two events centuries ahead, accurate to the day! No other book in the world contains such a prediction, and this by itself is sufficient proof that the Bible is not an ordinary book but inspired by God. Ponder this great fact which displays the greatness of God’s ability to tell the future before it happens.
